The Obsidian class project was begun in early 2385, when Starfleet was looking for a 1000+ meter warship capable of unrivaled destruction. With the near-total failure of the Draco class project only four years prior, they were careful in ensuring that the Obsidian would more than make up for what had been lost.

At the time, the Obsidian class was the largest vessel native to the Alpha or Beta quadrants. Bristling with dozens of GLG-30 disruptors and phaser arrays, the Obsidian is lethal from nearly every direction. Though the GLG-30 is known for its rapid-fire problems, the large number of turrets allows a split-firing solution: one designated set is active, giving another time to cool down.

Though her combat speed is nothing to write home about, the Obsidian's VariTranswarp unit allows speeds in excess of TWf 30 for extended periods. The cruiser's shuttlebay is also extremley flexible, allowing ships up to 150 meters long to dock within.

All in all, the Obsidian is an infinitely more successful design than the Draco was. Starfleet had finally found gold in their quest for a powerful means of combat.
